Here are links to materials I have developed to teach about the topic discussed in the Historical Origins of the Ideology of ISIS blog series to high school students in the classroom. The materials have been developed with ESL in mind. They should be comprehensible to high school students of a WIDA level of 3 or higher. First is an 8-page reader that is a background builder on some of the information in parts 2 and 3 of the blog series. This reader focuses on the connections in methods and tactics between different communist revolutionaries in the 20th century and connects it to Sayyid Qutb. Click the button below for access. The button below links to a simple student response sheet to that reader. The next one is really cool! This one is designed to take students through some of the textual analysis that was done in part 3 and part 4 of the blog series. It compares the writings of Marx, Lenin, and Qutb and guides for certain conclusions to be drawn. I have created this in a chunked format where students respond to certain parts as they go (a great ESL strategy), so there is space for student response within the document.
