Real Deal Teaching Program:

This training program is designed to equip staff at schools with classrooms of students with cultures of high social and verbal interaction with effective behavior management and instructional strategies to create a more productive and rigorous learning environment for their students. The program will consist of a 6-hour day of training in August 2023, followed by six subsequent follow-up sessions spaced throughout the school year.

Schools that have their staff trained in these techniques find that students stay in the classroom more and on-task behavior increases, disciplinary referrals and negative phone calls home reduce as well as staff stress and burnout. How is the Training Done?

This training can be done live and can be done online but is best done in-person. Training teachs about the psychological tendencies of young people that that cause common habits of off-task behavior that exist in all classrooms (interruption, side-talking during instruction, being off-task during independent work, resisting following directions, talking back at teachers etc.).

For all these common instances teachers are taught general dispositions and specific non-verbal strategies that re-direct petty misbehaviors at first instance so as to keep students on task with re-direction that is "cheap" in terms of time and energy so that teachers have tools to manage behavior before escalation occurs. When the training is extended, teachers also learn the common instructional mistakes that disconnect students from following the trail of learning, creating students who become insecure about their concept of a learner and who suffer the frustration of cognitive overload in the classroom (the most common root cause of student misbehavior). Teacher's learn what hiccups cause this to take place, how to remediate it and, more importantly, how to prevent it in the first place.

Strategies are not only modeled and practiced in role-playing by participants, but their use and application (as well as what happens when they are not applied) is demonstrated through real authentic video from actual classrooms. This is makes Real Deal Teaching a uniquely powerful program because teachers see its efficacy with their own eyes, and they practice out its application with their limbs, making them ready for immediate success afterwards.

All in all, the Real Deal Teaching program puts into a tangible praxis how teachers can exhibit themselves as adults in front of young people who earn authentic respect and whose authority is bought into as opposed to being coerced. Teachers who put into practice what is taught in this program are equipped to be leaders of students who young people experience as emotionally safe and genuinely worthy of being listened to.
