North Carolina
In North Carolina, homeschooling is regulated by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Parents or guardians who wish to homeschool their children in North Carolina must follow certain requirements, including:
- Notifying the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in writing within 15 days of starting to homeschool
- Providing the department with the name, age, and grade level of each child being homeschooled
- Ensuring that the child receives instruction in the subjects required by North Carolina law, which include reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science
- Keeping records of the child's progress, including attendance records and samples of the child's work
- Administering an annual standardized achievement test or alternative assessment to the child, or having the child's progress evaluated by a qualified third party
