New York

In New York, homeschooling is regulated by the New York State Education Department. Parents or guardians who wish to homeschool their children in New York must follow certain requirements, including:
  1. Notifying the New York State Education Department in writing within 10 days of starting to homeschool
  2. Providing the department with the name, age, and grade level of each child being homeschooled
  3. Ensuring that the child receives instruction in the subjects required by New York law, which include reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science
  4. Keeping records of the child's progress, including attendance records and samples of the child's work
  5. Administering an annual standardized achievement test or alternative assessment to the child, or having the child's progress evaluated by a qualified third party
Families who do not follow these requirements may be subject to legal action. It is important for families considering homeschooling in New York to carefully review and understand the state's homeschooling laws, including New York Education Law § 3204 et seq., to ensure that they are in compliance.
