In Montana, homeschooling is regulated by the Montana Office of Public Instruction. Parents or guardians who wish to homeschool their children in Montana must follow certain requirements, including:
- Notifying the Montana Office of Public Instruction in writing within 10 days of starting to homeschool
- Providing the office with the name, age, and grade level of each child being homeschooled
- Ensuring that the child receives instruction in the subjects required by Montana law, which include reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science
- Keeping records of the child's progress, including attendance records and samples of the child's work
- Administering an annual standardized achievement test or alternative assessment to the child, or having the child's progress evaluated by a qualified third party
