Montana

In Montana, homeschooling is regulated by the Montana Office of Public Instruction. Parents or guardians who wish to homeschool their children in Montana must follow certain requirements, including:
  1. Notifying the Montana Office of Public Instruction in writing within 10 days of starting to homeschool
  2. Providing the office with the name, age, and grade level of each child being homeschooled
  3. Ensuring that the child receives instruction in the subjects required by Montana law, which include reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science
  4. Keeping records of the child's progress, including attendance records and samples of the child's work
  5. Administering an annual standardized achievement test or alternative assessment to the child, or having the child's progress evaluated by a qualified third party
Families who do not follow these requirements may be subject to legal action. It is important for families considering homeschooling in Montana to carefully review and understand the state's homeschooling laws, including Montana Code Annotated § 20-5-101 et seq., to ensure that they are in compliance.
